US: Iran Missile Test Underscores Threat to Middle East, Europe
The United States says the reported test of a new Iranian ballistic missile underscores that country's threat to the Middle East and Europe, including Russia, which has opposed a planned U.S. regional missile defense system. VOA's David Gollust reports from the State Department that big-power diplomats are expected to discuss Iran's nuclear program and missile activity Thursday in Paris.

The Hidden Cost of War
In 2003, Donald Rumsfeld estimated a war with Iraq would cost $60 billion. Five years later, the cost of Iraq war operations is more than 10 times that estimate. So what's behind the ballooning figures? Joseph E. Stiglitz and Linda J. Bilme's exhaustively researched book, The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict, breaks down the price tag, from current debts to the unseen costs we'll pay for many years to come.

China's Bazooka Beats Henry Paulson's Peashooter
Officials in Beijing managed to do what their counterparts in Seoul couldn't: create a bit of optimism about Korea's economy. They did so with a massive $586 billion stimulus package, a step that upstaged Henry Paulson's $700 billion rescue plan in Asian capitals.
So much for the U.S. Treasury secretary's bazooka. That was the financial weapon Paulson threatened to aim at the U.S. credit crisis in July. Three months on, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is still sliding, U.S. consumers are worried and world leaders are biting their nails.

Are expectations getting too high for Obama?
One of the issues hurled against Barack Obama during the US presidential election campaign was his lack of experience. Now that he has won the election in overwhelming fashion, all that is about to change.
Thanks to the traditional enemies of the United States, Obama will have his hands full right after he takes his oath on January 20. Right now, both Russia and Iran have already begun their sabre-rattling.

Report: Obama to focus on bin Laden capture
President-elect Barack Obama plans major changes in U.S. policy on the war in Afghanistan and intends to renew the commitment to hunt for Osama bin Laden, underscoring the fight against al-Qaeda as the nation's highest priority, a newspaper reported Tuesday. The Washington Post said Obama, who takes office on Jan. 20, wants to explore a more regional strategy in Afghanistan, including the possibility of negotiations with Iran.
"This (al-Qaeda) is our enemy," the Post quoted an unnamed senior adviser as saying. "And he (bin Laden) should be our principal target."

Election Unleashes a Flood of Hope Worldwide
From the front lines of Iraq to more genteel spots like Harry’s Bar in Paris, the election of Barack Obama unlocked a floodgate of hope that a new American leader will redeem promises of change, rewrite the political script and, perhaps as important as anything else, provide a kind of leadership that will erase the bitterness of the Bush years.

Now we will learn what Barack Obama really thinks about Iraq
Had it not been for the global financial crisis, it is arguable that Iraq and other major security challenges would have been the issue that dominated the final run-up to the American presidential election campaign. But while Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and al-Qaeda and all the other challenges to world security ended up taking a back seat, the new president will still find them sitting at the top of his in-tray when he finally moves into the White House next year.

United States' promising policy towards Iran
A US interests section in the Iranian capital would be the first step towards restoring full diplomatic ties, severed since the 1979 hostage crisis amidst the tumult of the Islamic Revolution.
Tehran was informed of the US offer after rumours began to circulate about it last summer, The Seattle Times reported on 24 October, quoting senior US Bush administration officials. It also said that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is believed to view this move with favour.

Analysis: Why the next US president will be a wartime leader
The challenges posed by the Middle East are legion: "fragile and reversible" security in Iraq; military fallout from a possible IDF strike on Iran's nuclear program; the destabilizing consequences of a nuclear breakout by the Islamic Republic; a new round of violence between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority - this time in the West Bank; an Israeli military intervention in Gaza to halt renewed rocket attacks, preempt a Hamas military buildup, or crush the nascent Hamas government there; and the possibility of a second Hizbullah-Israeli war.

Clues to U.S. election result could come early
Trends in the race between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain could become clear soon after the first polls begin to close at 6 p.m. EST (2300 GMT) in Indiana.
Obama and McCain are locked in a surprisingly tight duel in Indiana, a Midwestern state that has voted Republican in every White House race since 1964. A breakthrough win for Obama, or even a neck-and-neck struggle, would be an encouraging sign of broad strength for the senator from neighboring Illinois.
