Waging new war would be disastrous
Despite these facts: The International Atomic Energy Agency, which inspects Iran's nuclear facilities, says it has no weapons program and is developing nuclear power for the days when its oil runs out. Our own top 16 U.S. spy agencies in D.C. issued a joint statement that said Iran does not have nor is it actively seeking nuclear weapons technology, and U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said on July 27 a war with Iran would be "disastrous on a number of levels." Iran Geneva talks: whose interpretation will triumph?
Was the meeting in Geneva filled with “meandering” small talk? Or did the discussions between world powers and Iran begin work on an intricately woven carpet, that in time, would yield an “elegant and durable” outcome? The two views, the first voiced by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the second by chief Iranian nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, say much about how the two foes approached Saturday’s meeting to resolve Iran’s long-running nuclear row with the West.

Iran's New Torture Chambers in Gohardasht Prison
Like Rajaiee Shahr(Gohardasht) Prison wasn't one of the worst in Iran, now they are testing new torture chamber/solitary confinement cells. I have been reading about this on a number of different human rights sites. This is the first time Gohardasht prison is trying out something like this. The solitary cells are very much like Section 209 of the Evin Prison, under direct supervision of the Ministry of Intelligence.

A nuclear Iran does not compare to Cold War
Your article on the Iranian threat ('Rumours of war spread as Israel flexes its muscle', World, last week) quotes me extensively but in a slanted way, attributing my analysis to 'right-wing' thinking and the 'hawks around Olmert'. Unfortunately, realities in the Middle East do not conform to the wishful thinking of The Observer or of political scientists who compare a nuclear Iran to the Cold War, Learn More ]

CLOSE GITMO, MR. PRESIDENT!
I think just about anybody who is informed understands the far-reaching ramifications of the recent ruling by SCOTUS that any of the terrorists currently being coddled in Gitmo are to be tried in American civilian courts. Doesn't take a mental giant to be more than a little peeved to hear that now these people who wish America (and the rest of us) harm are going to be given civilian lawyers and full access to the same rights and priviledges as US citizens. Yes, it is insane, I know.

IRAN: Word of Bush's alleged covert war hits Tehran
New Yorker magazine investigative journalist Seymour Hersh’s article this week alleging a major upping of the American campaign to fund and back covert operations against Iran became major news in Tehran today. The 6,000-word article alleged a secret campaign to fund ethnic separatist groups fighting the Iranian government and U.S. commandos scooping up intel on clandestine forays onto Iranian soil.

War With Iran: An Extremist Fantasy
They're calling the resolution the "Iran War Resolution" and yammering about how it was authored by AIPAC (American Israeli Public Affairs Committee) and is all being done on behalf of the evil Zionist oppressors in what ought to be a free, Islamosocialist Palestine. They claim that it's going to be used as a secret authorization for military action against Iran to launch us into the ultimate Neocon-inspired war of international imperialism, or some such claptrap. Among the most outspoken opponents of the bill is the increasingly shrill and irrational Representative Ron Paul who has apparently completely abandoned his Republican roots to become the voice of the anti-war left and the anti-Israeli John Birch Society. Dear Barack: So Much For Camelot
What a gladiatorial declaration to AIPAC you have made. But it’s old news now. I had to sit on it for more than a week to let it soak in. You, Barack, sold out America in your quest to become the next Democratic Dictator. Disappointed I am. Surprised I am not. I must assume you never found the time to read John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt’s book: The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy? Or maybe you did. In today’s America no serious candidate for president dares cross the Israel Lobby. Learn More ]

Double standard on Iran?
The credibility of the UN Security Council is under serious threat from the selective implementation of its resolutions. The threat of force to implement all resolutions on Iran to the letter is in puzzling contrast to the unending patience the Security Council exercises over disregard of its resolutions by Israel.

WAR?
Once again, notably in the wake of this week’s annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) policy conference and the visit here of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, there’s a lot of chatter about a possible attack by Israel and/or the United States on Iran. Olmert appears to have left the White House (and a dinner with Cheney Tuesday evening before the prime minister’s meeting with Bush) quite satisfied on this score, while rumors

No favor to Israel
There are those who feel that President George Bush did Israel a big favor by going into Iraq. Some contend that Israel has never had a better friend. I wonder. I’ve been led to believe that Israel has always been more worried about Iran than Iraq. In view of the current issues, this has been a realistic concern. Learn More ]

Talks with Iran aren't a betrayal
Once again President George Bush is trying to rewrite history, and it seems Sen. John McCain is following suit. It was not Ronald Reagan's people who refused to negotiate with Iran, resulting in the hostages' release. Rather, it was Jimmy Carter's team of negotiators who, in the last days of Carter's presidency, successfully negotiated their release (which did not occur until after Reagan was inaugurated).
